We’ve all heard the saying: money can’t buy happiness. In this lecture, Shawn Achor looks at new research exploring the link between money and happiness and asks some fundamental questions. For example, why haven’t steady increases in purchasing power translated into greater happiness for Americans? Why do some with less feel happier and more secure than those with more? Is it possible that spending money can make us lastingly fulfilled? Recent studies are starting to reveal the impact that mindset, and our brains, have on financial success. This explains why some people save while others spend, and why some people see risk where others see opportunity. The good news is that it appears that many of these attitudes can be learned and unlearned. Research suggests that if we can prolong the good feelings about our financial gains and not be overwhelmed by negative thinking in our economic lives, we will experience increased happiness and satisfaction.
